This celebrated volume is a thorough examination of some 5,000 descendants of John Goode, son of Richard Goode of Cornwall, who
emigrated first to Barbados and ultimately settled at Whitby, about four miles from Richmond, Virginia, at some point before 1661.
Commencing with a chapter on the English origins of the Goodes from 1148, the author, G. Brown Goode, meticulously lays out the s
tory of the Virginia Goodes and their allied families for eight generations in America to 1887.
In the process, we see the dispersion of this family from the Richmond environs to Lunenberg, Chesterfield, Prince Edward, and still
other counties in Virginia, through much of the ante-bellum South, and ultimately to places to the north and much further west.
Special features of the book include a study of the family surname, various conclusions concerning the heraldic claims of the Goodes,
    l
ists of family members who served in the armed forces or attended college, and a number of primary source reproductions.
However, it is the enormous scale and detail of the family history itself that impresses the researcher most and has caused the work to
remain in continued use to this day. In genealogical sketches of varying lengths, we witness the intersection of the Goodes with
hundreds of allied families far and wide. Seventeen generations detailed.
What a pity that the limitations of space prevent us from naming more than a mere sampling of them: Adams, Anderson, Andrews, Bacon,
Barksdale, Baskerville, Bass(e), Blair, Bolling, Botts, Boyd, Branch, Brown, Campbell, Carrington, Carter, Clarke, Cocke, Cole, Coleman,
Collier, Cumming(s), Daniel, Dawson, Finch, Fleming, Garber, Gillett, Green/Greene, Gregory, Guerry, Harris(s), Harrison, Hendrick, Hill,
Holt, Horseley, Jefferson, Johnson, Jones, Lemoine, Lewis, Lyle, McCullough, Mason, Maury, Maynard, Megginson, Moody, Moore,
Moorman, Morgan, Morrison, Mosby, Murrell, Nelson, Osborne, Parks, Perkins, Pleasants, Poague, Price, Randolph, Robertson, Scott,
Sherrod, Shotwell, Simms/Simmes, Slaton, Smith, Spotswood, Steger, Thornton, Tucker, Vaughan, Venable, Walton, Ward, Watkins,
Wharton, Wilkerson, Willbanks, Williams, Wingfield, Wooldridge, Wright, and Yarborough.
NOTE: Goad families also resided in Rappahannock and Richmond counties during the late 1600's-early 1700's, as evidenced by
births, marriages and deaths recorded in the register of North Farnham Parish. The Dodson family records indicate marriages with Goads.
