VERY RARE
This decorative and historic painting combines artistic and equestrian accomplishment. The Byerley Turk (c. 1680) , The Darley Arabian (1700), and The Godolphin Arabian (1724), hold a critical place in equine history, as they formed the trio from which all thoroughbreds may be traced through the male line.
The other horses forming “Fathers of the Turf 1683-1822” relate to the three horses noted above, and all distinguished themselves as leading racehorses. Herod (1758), for example, was the great grandson of The Byerley Turk and established a reputation for being one of the best racehorses of the time. Doomed (1777), was the sin of Herod, who was unbeaten as a three-year old. One of his wins was the Derby in its inaugural year. Even more successful was Eclipse (1764), from the line of the Darley Arabian, who was never beaten, winning 18 races including 11 King’s Plates. Eclipse became respected as the second truly great racehorse in the history of the Turf.
