Bambara "Boli" fetish - Mali
Product Description
ENGLISH SPEAKING
Dimensions of 25 x 33 x 16 cms.
Weight of about 3.310 kgs without packaging.
Materials: Wood, plant fibers, earth, traces of libations.
Presumed age: Mid to second half of the 20th century.
The boli is "the manifestation of the vital force, of the energy of a deified spirit to which it serves as a receptacle" (Youssouf Tata Cissé in Magies, Dapper Museum 1996).
In Mali and in neighboring countries, a boli is a manufactured object which is the source of extraordinary powers and which is worshiped.
Halfway between being and the thing, the boli must be nourished by the blood of sacrifices and it is on this condition that it can act as protection or as a weapon.
Through an initial miracle and secret manufacturing and maintenance procedures, the boli produces a radiant force that compels its users to handle it with care.
The object is all the more famous as the thick crust which covers it testifies to its age. In this strange object, the missionary and the Muslim conqueror saw the mark of Satan, while the colonizer made it the symbol of a primitive age.
Beautiful proportions for this specimen, of good size, and partially covered with traces of libations.
